    (joining Scott Darling – 2015 Chicago Blackhawks). 

    Bussi started his journey with us several summers ago.
    Bus has trained in our
    PAD Pass, GCG, Elite Development and PGD Programs
    in addition to coaching with us over four summers.

      Vague goals get vague results. This week's primer is all about SMART goal setting, and we're breaking it down one letter at a time. Today it's S for Specific. Saying you want "the best season ever" sounds good, but it doesn't mean anything. A specific team goal is finishing top four in the standings, making the playoffs, and being a top four team in goals against. A specific individual goal is playing 30 games, hitting a 2.50 goals against average, and a .915 save percentage. Numbers give you something to chase.       Picking your gear before picking who fits it? That's backwards. Coach John says the person fitting you matters as much as the brand you choose. Does the shop carry multiple brands, and multiple lines within each? A softer pad reacts differently on rebounds than a harder one. Blockers trade protection for mobility depending on the build. Your fitter should know all of it, not just the flagship line. You also don't have to match brands across your whole setup. Better catch glove from one company, better blocker from another? Mix it.       Stop It Goaltending is excited to announce that Holden “PD” Melgoza has been named our new Director of Advising and Mentorship. PD brings over eight years of experience scouting, recruiting, and developing elite goaltenders across the NCAA Division I, USHL, and ECHL levels. He uniquely blends academic ambition with a deep passion for hockey instruction and mentorship. Most recently, he served as the goaltending and video coach for the Kansas City Mavericks, the ECHL affiliate of the Seattle Kraken. Prior to his time in KC, PD served as an assistant with the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL and held coaching positions at both the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. PD has also served as a USA Hockey Goaltending Development Coach, working with premier programs such as the NTDP, the National Select Festival, and the Pacific and Alaska Districts. In 2024, he was the goaltending and video coach for Team USA at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Widely respected for his ability to connect with players on and off the ice, PD takes a holistic, person-first approach to development. He is highly proficient in video analysis and consistently delivers detailed, actionable scouting and game reports. During the off-season, PD continues to train NHL goaltenders, including Jeremy Swayman, and collaborates with NHL goalie coaches Colin Zulianello (Seattle Kraken) and Thomas Speer (San Jose Sharks) in high-level summer training environments. A proud California native, PD was born and raised in Long Beach. Stop It Goaltending Advising was founded in 2023 and has achieved remarkable success placing and mentoring motivated goaltenders at the club, academy, prep, junior, and college levels. We are proud to have such an experienced and respected member of the goaltending community lead our department as we continue to provide our clients with premier advising and mentorship services.       Fit is everything when it comes to your chest protector. In this week's gear chat, Chuck Losh of Goalie Monkey shows what to check when adjusting a chest protector for the best fit. Start with the shoulders, when they sit right you present bigger to the shooter. Then check the wrists for full articulation, so your glove and blocker don't rub against the protector. Most chest protectors hide elevator straps to raise or lower the arms as a goaltender grows, plus adjustable pauldrons to keep shoulders clear of your mask.       Are your goalie's leg pads actually fitted right, or just close enough? Chuck Losh, GM of Goalie Monkey, breaks down exactly what he checks when fitting leg pads. It's not just about size on a chart. He's watching where the knees land inside the knee block. Centered is the goal. Too far back throws a goalie off center. Too far forward starts rounding out the bottom of the pad, and that's the tell that they've outgrown it. For growing goaltenders, Chuck looks for an inch or two of room left and uses fastening position to stretch the life of a pad. Fasten higher now to center the knees in a slightly bigger pad, then fasten lower as they grow into it. Same pad, more seasons out of it. Small adjustments. Real savings. Better fit.
